If the terms redness, discomfort, dehydration, and sensitive skin makes you think about your skin than listen up!

Your environment may be to blame! Yup, Studies are showing that environmental triggers known as free radicals (yes, the very air we breathe) can actually sensitize our skin. Sensitized skin from your environment is different from genetic sensitivity, or being born with sensitive skin.

What do we mean by your environment? Think pollution, humidity, and sudden temperature changes in climates – like going from the cold, dry winds outdoors to dry heat indoors. This time of year can be especially cruel to our skin. Cold rain one day, than winds and sunshine the next, our skin can go into protection overdrive! When your skin is sensitized, its protective outer layer lets irritants, microbes and allergens pass through and cause adverse reactions such as blushing and allergies. Air pollution particles hover in big cities, the countryside and even in our homes. Small enough to enter skin, they can accelerate skin sensitivity and irritation.

These are just 3 of the main reasons you may be experiencing skin sensitivity!

Sensitizer #1: Pollution

Air pollution contains microscopic contaminants, called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which help produce free radicals. These strip the skin of barrier lipids, which help retain moisture and keep out dirt and other impurities. A compromised skin barrier can lead to increased skin sensitivity, discomfort and even premature signs of skin aging. Protecting the skin from free radicals can greatly reduce skin sensitivity!

Sensitizer #2: Humidity

When the skin is exposed to low humidity, this moisture evaporates quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and peeling.

High humidity levels like we have on the coast can also impact the skin. Your pores on the skin absorb moisture, which is normally a good thing. However, high humidity levels can lead to excess sweat and oil production there for clogging your pores with toxins. Additionally, high humidity promotes the growth of bacteria and mold resulting in skin irritation, redness, and even breakouts. To top it all off, humidity can even cause the body to sweat more, which also dries the skin out.

Don’t start looking for a real estate agent just yet!  There are things YOU can do to help your skin, from proper nutrition, skin care targeted to help reduce sensitivity like Dermalogica’s new Ultra calming products, and regular facials.

Sensitizer #3: Temperature

Colder weather, central heating in your home as well as hot weather and air conditioning can all deprive skin of its moisture, leaving it feeling dry, irritated, and sensitive. Freezing cold winds can also remove moisture from skin left exposed. In the winter months, you might find your skin to be rough, red, tight, cracked or peeling. Ouch!

The heat can also lead to skin sensitivities like a heat rash, which happens when your sweat ducts get closed off. The moisture gets trapped under the skin and can lead to a rash made up of blisters or bumps!

The good news is that the skin (when healthy!) is a pretty efficient filter of what's good versus what's bad on its own. And, since you can’t always avoid harsh environmental factors like pollution or extreme weather, here’s how to keep your skin calm, strong, and healthy.

What can you do to fight the affects of Sensitivity?

Our UltraCalming line soothes dehydration and discomfort – so you can stop hiding behind skin sensitivity. Every UltraCalming product is also formulated without lanolin also called wool wax or wool grease, is a wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals (YUCK!) , SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial fragrances or colors, which can make sensitive skin worse.

Dermalogica has many lines and products to help with every skin concern you may have. The Ultra calming line is great not just for those with sensitive skin, or allergies, it is also great for those who are dry or dehydrated skin, or those who tend to be on the oilier side.

Step #1 Cleansing the skin: Ultracalming cleanser is a gel/cream which makes it an ideal cleanser for those with dry skin as well. This cleanser can go on wet or dry skin. Massaging it in for at least 1minute morning and night.

Step #2  Hydrate the skin: The brand new Calm water gel is the most popular moisturizer on the market today! The Weightless water-gel moisturizer hydrates dry, sensitive skin. Refreshing gel formula transforms into a skin-quenching fluid upon application, forming a weightless barrier against environmental assault. The new Ultracalming water gel is hydrating without the richness of heavy cream moisturizers.

Step #3 Barrier Defense Booster: If there is one thing to take from this whole blog is PROTECT THE BARRIER! Pretend the air is waging war on your skin; this barrier booster is your army! Concentrated oil booster soothes, nourishes and moisturizes to restore balance to sensitive skin. Triple Defense Complex nourishes the skin, relieves dryness and reinforces barrier integrity against future irritation.

Step #4 Super sensitive shield spf30: Wearing a sunscreen is so important, why go through all of these previous steps just to have your skin beaten down by harmful UV rays?  Super Sensitive shield is sunscreen ideal for sensitized, reactive and recently resurfaced skin. Natural mineral sunscreens help shield against photo damage and UV exposure. Dermalogicas exclusive UltraCalming Complex with Oat, and botanical actives to help minimize discomfort. The sheer formula provides optimal hydration and helps protect and reinforce barrier lipids, which are often compromised in sensitized skin conditions.
